LI-COR offers two long-term chambers (8100-101, 8100-104) to make unattended measurements of diel and seasonal soil CO2 flux patterns. These chambers attach to either the LI-8100 (direct connection), or to the LI-8150 Multiplexer. Both chambers have undergone extensive testing throughout the development cycle to address the impacts of chamber design on CO2 efflux from the soil.

Long-Term Chambers - 8100-101, 8100-104

  • Unattended measurements for weeks or months at a time
  • Vertical or horizontal chamber drive mechanism (allows exposure of measurement area to natural microclimate)
  • Perforated baseplate (minimizes soil perturbations around measurement area)
  • Double gasket system to prevent leaks

8100-104

8100-101 Long-Term Chamber

The 8100-101 Long-Term Chamber is designed for use with the LI-8100 in a single chamber, long-term system. The 8100-101 also can be used for multiplexing with the LI-8150 Multiplexer. The chamber has a vertical lift strut mechanism (below) to raise and lower the chamber.

8100-104 Long-Term Chamber

Designed for use with the LI-8150 Multiplexer, the 8100-104 Long-Term Chamber is an economical, lightweight solution for multiplexed systems. The 8100-104 expands the capabilities of the LI-8100 System and provides an additional chamber option to measure both spatial and temporal variation of soil CO2 flux. The chamber has a lift-and-rotate drive mechanism (below right) that rotates the chamber to six configurable open positions.

Important Differences Between the 8100-101 and 8100-104 Long-Term Chambers

Although the long-term chambers are identical to one another in terms of the measurement protocols they follow, there are some key operational differences to consider, particularly when using the chambers in a multiplexed system:

8100-101 Vertical Chamber Drive (side view)

8100-104 Lift-and-Rotate Drive (top view)

  • 8100-101 Long-Term Chamber uses a strut mechanism that opens and closes the chamber in a 180° vertical arc.
  • 8100-101 comes with 2 m cable/hose assembly attached.
  • When used with the LI-8150 Multiplexer, the 8100-101 requires a separate Chamber Sensor Interface (one per chamber) for connecting auxiliary sensors.
  • 8100-104 Long-Term Chamber uses a lift-and-rotate drive mechanism that opens the chamber up slightly and then around horizontally to any of six open positions.
  • 8100-104 requires choice of 2 m or 15 m cable/hose assembly.
  • Auxiliary Sensor inputs are integrated into chamber for use in a multiplexed system.

Chamber Sensor Interface

Chamber Sensor Interface In a multiplexed system with 8100-101 chambers, an 8150-661 Chamber Sensor Interface is required for each chamber where auxiliary sensors are to be connected. The Interface allows for connection of up to three auxiliary sensors, such as soil temperature and moisture sensors offered by LI-COR. The sealed inputs on the Interface each provide a DC excitation source and a 0-5VDC general input channel.

Built-in Sensor Inputs

8100-104 built-in auxiliary sensor inputs In a multiplexed system with 8100-104 chambers, auxiliary sensors are connected directly to the control panel of the chamber. The panel inputs allow for connection of up to three auxiliary sensors, such as soil temperature and moisture sensors offered by LI-COR. The sealed inputs each provide a DC excitation source and a 0-5VDC general input channel.
